Comfort Through Design

How many times have you googled coronavirus today?

How many times have you spoken about coronavirus to someone today?

How many times have you thought about coronavirus today?

Odds are….a lot!

It goes without saying that we are all continuing to figure out how to acclimate to the new reality we are faced with. Some of us are battling this health crisis on the front lines, risking their lives. Others are working longer hours in their businesses as a result of the recent changes. The majority of us are stuck at home day in and day out. Some of us are not even leaving the house to get groceries thanks to delivery services. While it may very well be that feeling “stuck” at home might be a simple attitude change, small changes in the décor of your home may improve your overall environment and well-being and battle the overwhelming coronavirus obsession. Most of the time, we walk or sit around our home and we see (or sometimes do not see) objects in view that unconsciously send information to our brain.

We have a couple suggestions that seem simple yet can make drastic differences in your everyday periphery.

#1 Mirrors

If you have not already discovered the power a mirror holds in the house, then this should be the first change you make in your home to improve your mood. Mirrors are relatively inexpensive and easily delivered to your door. You might even have one lying around somewhere without a purpose. Mirrors reflect light, bouncing light off in different directions of the room. Mirrors make the room feel larger and expansive. Mirrors might reflect other items you love in your home, yay for doubling the love! What reflects in the mirror counts so remember to place a mirror where it reflects light appropriately and captures other items in your home from an angle.

#2 Art

Art takes many forms. Wall art, sculptural art, pottery, vases, furniture, the list goes on. Art does not have to create happiness in your home. It can create an air of mystery, encourage creativity, invoke thought, or deepen your sense of spirituality. Art can be drawings that your child made last year or this morning when you were yelling at them to get to their online class. Art can be how you arrange your books on your bookshelf as well as prompt you to read one now that you have more time. Art can be how you hang family photographs on your wall and remind you of the gratitude you have for your loved ones. If you’re low on cash, a framed picture print out of your favorite piece of art can do the trick in instill the sensations of your choice in your space. As an added benefit, the walls on your next Zoom chat might just give your observers the sense of relief they needed in the moment.

#3 Clean

Yes we said it! Clean! Being in a clean home makes a world of a difference and now there is no excuse that you have no time! An organized pantry makes figuring out dinner easier. Vacuumed floors are nice if you choose to be barefoot during quarantine. A made bed feels more inviting at the end of a stressful day. A clean dog can be much more enjoyable to be around. A clean bathroom can make you feel more relaxed as you begin or strip away the day. A clean home is not only a healthier home but a safer one. The next time you walk around the house to clear your mind, clear that table surface and enjoy the clarity your mind perceives as you spend less time looking at that crumb and more on what is important to you.

We hope that these tips will not only help you get through these difficult times but through the next one as well. We do not know how long we will have to stay home but we do know that we love to do so more when we create comfort through design.
