Volunteer Day at Earth and Images

The other day we were given the opportunity to volunteer for Habitat for Humanity right here in Phoenix. Many families find themselves in need of shelter due to a variety of circumstances—unsafe neighborhoods, damaged structures, lack of access to affordable financing, etc. Habitat for Humanity is a nonprofit organization that helps families build and improve places to call home. Families in need are able to apply to build a home with Habitat for Humanity. These individuals play a hands-on role, including performing “sweat equity”, working alongside volunteers to help build and renovate places they call home. Additionally, these future home owners are required to attend financial education and budget planning classes to eventually be financially responsible for the home.

The Mosqueda Family

The Mosqueda Family

The family we worked for on our volunteer day shown above are Miguel and Karen, born in Mexico and moved to Arizona when they were very young. Since that time, Miguel and Karen married and had their beautiful daughter, Dalila. Miguel has worked as a welder for five years, and Karen currently stays home and takes care of Dalila. Miguel, Karen, and Dalila love to spend quality time together and frequently visit local parks, the library, museums, and see an occasional movie. Dalila dreams of being a teacher when she grows up and Miguel and Karen support her dreams. They encourage her to do well in school and believe that anything is possible. The family rents a room from Karen’s parents, and although they enjoy being close, the space is cramped. Miguel, Karen, and Dalila currently share one room. Miguel and Karen would love for their daughter to have her own room, where she can creatively express herself and have enough space to keep up with her homework. A friend referred them to Habitat. Building their own home and providing a spacious environment for their daughter to grow inspired Miguel and Karen to apply. They are incredibly thankful for the partnership and are excited to see their dream of homeownership come true!

Our Earth and Images team was fortunate enough to be able to give our time and a bit of elbow grease to the Mosqueda family. It fills us with joy that we can help others in a time of need. We can’t wait for the home dedication in February!
